Magic Jack or Skype : Which Internet Phone Do You Choose?

Magic Jack or Skype :  Which Internet Phone Do You Choose?

christmas 2008While cutting costs in the home office back a few months ago, I got rid of my home phone and started using Skype. I think my cost was around $29.95 a year for unlimited local or long distance calls.

I have liked Skype fairly well. Only a few issues with the sound every now and then. It also has webcam where you can see your friends as you talk and you can do conference calls. I've used this feature once.

I thought I was happy saving over $500 a year from not having a land line.

While talking with a client, he told me he was using Magic Jack on his computer and could hook up regular portable phone to it so he could carry it around the house like a regular phone.

From the Magic Jack website you can try it free for a month.

Now... that caught my interest because I'm known to multitask and pace the floor while on the phone. I haven't enjoyed being tied to a headset and computer while using Skype.

I'm wondering if you have tried Magic Jack and what you think of it. I checked reviews and YouTube videos online and it sounded good. I ordered one from the website so I could compare both.

I personally like Skype, because it can be used in so many computer applications. Have you tried a bluetooth headset? you can find those and get a blue tooth tongle for your USB port (i think)

That was going to be my suggestion as well. I just use my cell for everything, but I am positive there are wireless headsets that you can use with Skype. I use it on occasion, but haven't made the jump to VOIP all the way. Can you transfer your home calls to a cell when you're not at home? I would love to have a fax set-up at home, but I've not had a home phone for more than 2 years.

Sandy - I haven't tried that yet. Would you still be able to walk all around the house? How far is the range?

Rob - I was thinking of only using it for long distance out of my area not covered on my cell phone. On incoming calls wouldn't I have to keep my Internet connection on? I use a Sprint aircard and I disconnect when not in use.

I use Skype for my home home and get good service from it. One of my realtor partners uses Magic Jack and will not use anything else.

I love Skype!  We have had it for a few years.  You can purchase a regular phone (it looks like something from StarTrek but kinda cool).  Mine is cordless and works just like a home phone should.  The phone was $100 but consider the convenience and savings over all.

Darrell - I'm hoping I will like it too. Nice to have another cheap option.

Melody - I remember you telling me about that Star Trek phone! Cool!

I still have a phone to ue for local service and use cell and Jajah.com for long distance, you dial through computer and it rings your phone then other party's and your talking on phone not computer. If your both members it is free. When I was waiting for my wife to get a fiancee visa, I set up an account for her and called her in Thailand everyday for free.

I havent tried it, but have had friends have problems with the internet phone stuff.  One just switched to the Cable companies triple play Phone/internet/TV deal and loves it, and the sound quality is great. and it uses the regular phones in the house, no need to be near the computer, no need to give up the phone number, you just get rid of the phone bill.

Michael - That would work out well if you are both members. Calling Thailand everyday for free is great. Most of my calls are for out of town clients.

Robert - I was releived to get rid of the phone line. A liberating moment! LOL

I keep my main phone line because it works when every thing else fails.  Of course I am a worry wart and if I need 911 I can call 911 drop the phone and someone will come to my door and give me some help.

Hmmm, I don't know anything about Magic Jack. Interesting to hear about it. Thanks Lizette.

Gene - When we had an ice storm recently the only phone that was working was the cell phone that is making me rethink the land line issue.

Lizette I can tell you love twitter so do I.

Well, while I don't have either, I've heard a lot about both and most of the positive comments come about the Magic Jack.  But both of them need the internet connection to work.  If you want incoming calls, you'd have to stay connected all the time.

I'll have to go tell Rob about TrustFax.com  Cheap fax receive and send from your computer.

Lizette - thanks for this post and question; I appreciated the comments. I am doing research for alternatives to Qwest and Skype and MagicJack both seem like good alternatives. I think I might try MagicJack.

Best wishes for 2009!
