T-Mobile G1 Google Phone...My Love - Hate Relationship

T-Mobile G1 Google Phone...My Love - Hate Relationship

I've been wanting to upgrade my Razer Phone for awhile. I checked out many models like Blackberry and Treo750 and was almost ready to commit to one of them.

With a few phones it would mean changing carriers. My T-Mobile contract would run out in November, so I felt I might make a decision.

The very day (I think it was Oct. 22) the G1 was available for sale, I received an email from T-Mobile describing the details.

After reviewing all the amazing features, I called to order one.

Now that it is here, I am having a few difficulties.

One is that when I put in my SIM Card it didn't populate my contacts correctly. It left quite a few out. So when a call comes in, the name does not show up and I have no idea who it is.

Also, I made the mistake of uploading all my Hotmail contacts into G-Mail and it made it even harder for me to figure out that my regular contacts were missing.

Anyway, I have had to erase everything and start over twice. Also went back to my razor to write down a few contact numbers I knew were missing.

At one point, I had it packed up and ready to send back...buyer's remorse they call it. For some reason...I left it in the box on my dining room table for a few days. Then, I had a change of heart.

Maybe it's just me not wanting to learn a few new tricks.

So, I've been trying it out again for the past few days. I've still been putting my SIM Card in my Razor to make things easier to get some contact numbers.

I do like the Google maps that I need instead of buying a separate GPS. It has many more programs that I can use.

I guess I will keep it and start learning to use it better.

Have any of you readers bought this one? What are your thoughts?

I have not purchased that particular phone yet but have been waiting for the release.  The phone I am upgrading from is the T-Mobile MDA.  I had exactly the same problems when I first purchased it.  I called them directly from the phone and they walked me through it.  I also have walking into a store and they helped a lot.  Don't send it back yet!

Lizette, are you in a G3 zone?  I was going to get my daughter one as she lost her blackberry, but the G3 zone is not in Ann Arbor yet. It is in Detroit but that is it. So we are waiting .

Melody - I think I am doing better with it today. It runs dwn the battery quicky so it's good to keep my bacup Razor phone.

Sally - You may like it. It has many cool features.

Missy - I'm not in a G3 zone for the street maps but they are adding cities all the time. Just my luck!

Don't look at me.... I still like my Razor.   :)     But it isn't easy to text with it, for sure!

The learning curve is the hardest part of new toys! Like my Crackberry... but can't help but wonder what is new out there. Can't get the I-phone in my area because of the poor coverage.

Wish you were here in Orlando.

Connie - That's my problem too. I still love it.

Susie - I'm doing better with the G1 today. Bit by bit I'm getting better and it's growning on me.

Ahhh I switched from the Razr to a Nokia smartphone then finally to the blackberry!  I had the same remorse from Razr to Nokia.  I say stick with it and let it grow on ya (like you mentioned above.)

I had the same problem populating the phone numbers and just went back, switched the SIM and manually wrote the numbers and names down and manually entered, what a drag.

Renee - I will be doing that task today. I did put in some of the crucial ones I found missing right away. Now for all the others! Ugggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Hi Lizette...Sorry I can't help you out.  I recently went from a Treo to a Blackberry.  Two different Verizon stores tried to download my contacts to my new phone.  They were unable to download even one.

I am starting over from scratch.

Good luck.

Lizette I have a T-Mobile Dash. It is a good phone but I need to upgrade. I want to get something that has a GPS system and something that I can download music onto it until I get my I-Pod. I heard about this phone and might have to check it out. Have a great weekend. Great post.

Lizette, I'm getting ready to move from my Treo 750 to a Blackberry Storm - soon to come out. I have all of my contacts on my computer as well because I could sync them from my phone.....can we do that with the BlackBerry? Anyone know? I like the touch screen idea.....those little keys for texting don't work well with my nails. ;-)

Kathleen, I spent all day yesterday typing in all my contacts and numbers.

Lanre - I like it so far. It does zap the battery fast though.

Teri - Hmmm..I don't know about that one.

Lizette,

The technology is great but learning it, keeping it working, choosing between options is such a royal pain.

I have the Google G1 Phone. But I am still trying to figure out how this phone can be useful for me as a real estate professional.
