Pay It Forward - A Little hope At McDonalds

I've read about people doing this and I planned to try it out the next time I did order through the drive-up window. Today was my chance to pay it forward for the folks behind my car.

It looked to be a family of four in the car. As I paid for my meal, I asked the guy at the window if I could pay for the people behind me in line. The thing about this is you won't know of the outcome.

SnowmanThe other day I read a story in the letter to the editor in the Lexington Herald and the letter was from someone where this had been done for them.

Here is what they wrote...

I was waiting in line at McDonald's drive through on Harrodsburg Road last month.

When I got to the window, the young man told me that the patrons in the car in front of me had paid for my food.

I  do not know who those people were but the gift I received from them was something I really needed.

In the previous monthes I experienced the loss of my mother, I found out I have lung cancer an have begun chemotherapy.

I have taken many things for granted in my 45 years of life and have been a pessimistic person.

That was one gesture and wave from the people in the car in front of me as they drove off, affected me in more ways than I can say.

To them, I say, "Thank You," because I needed that gesture probabaly more than any in my life.

There are good people in this world and you do not have to know someone for them to impact your life.

Hope is what I needed, and a $4 gesture from the car in front of me from people I did not know,  instilled hope in me. treasure all the people you know and the good people you may not know this season and may God bless YOU!

KODAK Moment - Wood Bridges That are Vanishing From Madison County KY

KODAK Moment - Wood Bridges That are Vanishing From Madison County KY

As I was looking for one of my favorite pictures to enter into the Kodak Moment contest, I found this favorite moment that I had one summer day in Madison County KY.

I had been out touring homes with a client near US 25 in Richmond and after I drove across this wood bridge I stopped to take a few pictures for later. Good thing I did.

Now this bridge is gone. Yes, it's not even there now. Hard to imagine that something this beautiful is gone.   Most of the wooden bridges I remember seeing all my life in Madison County have vanished.

Over the years, I have taken pictures of old stores, bridges and buildings all around Madison County and Richmond. I'm always sad to see that now they are gone too. That's progress, I guess.

Right now in Central Kentucky, we are experiencing extremely cold weather. Last night snow and today a freezing rain.  Brrrr! This picture makes me have hope that we will be warm again.

It's rare to experience all this snow and cold before Christmas. My mother commented yesterday that it reminded her of the weather back in the 50's and 60's. I do remember seeing old pictures of us kids playing in lots of snow. Maybe she is right.

I wonder if this has anything to do with global warming?

Holiday Miracles - Santa Arrives Early To Save The Day

Santa Arrives Early To Save The Day

SantaI just received a call from a friend about a catastrophe that happened yesterday at her house.

She was on her way home from the hospital where she was recovering from being very ill.

For weeks she has dealt with surgery to have her tonsils removed, secondary infection, dehydration and then a sinus infection.

Finally she was ready to go home so she can enjoy Christmas on antibiotics. Relieved, but with a stuffy head, she checks out.

Kids in tow, she opened the garage door to pull the car inside.

In a state of shock and disbelief she saw that the ceiling had caved in on everything in the garage! Water was pouring in from the ceiling! WHAT????

Jumping out of her car stunned, she realized that she would have to wade through all the freezing water to get to the main shut-off in the basement. Once she made it down there... it was full of water too!

She later found out a pipe had burst in the garage ceiling because of lack of insulation in the attic space.

The house had 3 floors of flood damage, water was everywhere and had buckled the walls too! Even all the Christmas presents were ruined.

Frantic, she called the insurance company and they were there within the hour and sent in a team of people to help.

Earlier in the day as a surprise, she had forgotten that Santa was scheduled to stop by to visit with her kids.

He arrived in that first hour in the middle of all the chaos!   She answered the door all a wet mess and out of her mind. What else could happen??

SantaAs bad as it all was, Santa was the very thing to bring some hope to a miserable situation.

Laughing, they all took a moment to see that they had each other and things happen for unknown reasons.

Pictures were made with Santa and maybe as those kids get older they will remember the time he arrived to  save the day.

Today, she says the silver lining is that it has made her able to let go of all the things in boxes she could not let go of before the flood.

We had discussed how to start cleaning out and not having so many things in the house so it could be shown to prospective buyers.

This was hard to do for her becuse she even had an online EBay business in the basement. Now it was all ruined. All the tubberware bins of stock were all wet. No way to sell it now.

Cardboard boxes that now are soggy mess, have to be thrown away.   It will be easier to de-clutter and get things ready to move out.

The good thing is that the insurance company will do all the repair and cleanup to make it look better than before. New bathroom tile, carpet, flooring, fixtures, drywall and paint.

Serious Note: be sure to check your insulation in the attic if water pipes are in the ceiling.

The tiniest initial toe-hold can accomplish great things----without dynamite!

I admit I do like to have my way. At least most of the time it happens if it is supposed to. Maybe a steady progress is the best way to get what you want. I love this story below by Charles Buel.

Via Charles Buell, Seattle, WA, Home Inspector (Charles Buell Inspections.com):

Most people explode through life.

This is the approach of the volcano, mud slide and tsunami.

While that is one way to do it, there is also the approach where the “slow way goes.”  This is the approach where the wind and the rain gradually wear the rock down into sand to where it can easily be washed away.

I am not sure that there is a right way or a wrong way except in relation to what is necessary for what one is attempting to accomplish.

If one is attempting to blow up a bridge because the enemy is fast approaching, and sure to overrun the forces of “good,” then perhaps dynamite is the appropriate choice.  If on the other hand that is not the case, and destroying the bridge would result in months of starvation because food could not be delivered----perhaps a slower approach might be advantageous.

The wisest of men and women know how to tell the difference.  I know I don’t and haven’t always known the difference.  Sometimes running ahead full speed only gets us to the end and we can’t go back and enjoy the trip.  We have missed all that was to be seen and experienced along the way because the goal was seen as more important than the journey.

Patience and time is all it takes

When we look at the time it took this tree to move and split this great rock the way it has, we cannot help but marvel at the shared journey the two have surely had.

Dynamite, while spectacular for a moment, could not possibly have resulted in the same tales to tell that the rock and the tree would have----its story would have been quite different.  As the rock split, wider and wider, water turning to ice would have assisted in the project----making it easier for the tree to perform its task

How goes your battle with the rock?

Do you have patience----or prefer dynamite?

Pay It Forward - The FACEBOOK Karma Experiment

I stumbled across the Karma Experiment one night while reading some of the featured posts on Activerain. At first it reminded me of bartering but it isn't just value for equal value.

I always love this sort of thing and do it quite often with businesses for ad links in my newsletter. After I went over to Facebook Karma ExperimentI clicked the "like" button on the page to get started.

You will need to find something you would like to have that is posted there, ask for it and post something of value of your own. No junk.

I found some cool artsy pillows that I plan to use in my bench swing next spring.

After asking for them, I posted a Kodak camera that got me started in the art business.

Here was my camera giveaway:

An art collector had bought it for me and I had traded him a piece of my art.

Even back then it was a karma experiment.

It seemed only fair to offer it up again to someone that needed it to launch their own art on etsy.com

So my beloved camera will head out to Bellingham Washington tomorrow by priority mail.

It's all about creating good karma in this life. Create some today.
